Bathroom Renovations Cape Town: Full Remodels, Walk-In Showers and Shower Waterproofing

Bathroom renovations in Cape Town cost R60,000 to R120,000 for a full remodel in a June 2026 Western Cape renovation guide, R25,000 to R50,000 for a cosmetic update and R20,000 to R45,000 to turn a bath into a walk-in shower. A remodel quote should name its shower waterproofing system.

Use the form below for a repair or renovation quote.

The quote follows a visit that measures the room, checks the floor, walls and plumbing, and looks at the ceiling below if the bathroom is upstairs.

B1 is a June 2026 Western Cape renovation guide based on projects in Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Wellington and Durbanville, with labour and mid-range materials. B2 is a national bathroom renovation guide (undated, read October 2026). Tile choice alone moves the total: B1 notes tiles from R150 to R900 per m².

What a Bathroom Remodel Includes, in Order

  1. Strip out. Old sanitaryware, tiles and screed come out; rubble is removed.
  2. Plumbing first fix. Supply and waste pipes are moved or renewed while the walls are open.
  3. Screed and falls. The floor is screeded with a fall to the shower drain.
  4. Waterproofing. A membrane goes over the shower floor and walls, the floor junctions and around every pipe.
  5. Tiling. Walls and floor are tiled and grouted: tilers in Cape Town.
  6. Second fix. Toilet, basin, taps, shower mixer, screen and accessories go in.
  7. Ceiling and paint. A PVC or moisture-resistant ceiling and paint finish the room.

Shower Waterproofing

Grout and tiles shed water but do not stop it. Water that passes the grout soaks into the wall behind the shower, the floor under it and, upstairs, the ceiling below. A membrane under the tiles stops it. The quote names the system and where it goes: the full shower floor, the shower walls and the floor-to-wall junctions.

A shower that already leaks is not sealed from the top. The tiles come off, the old screed is checked for falls, the membrane goes down and the shower is re-tiled. A damp wall next to a shower is sometimes a pipe, not the membrane, so the source is confirmed first: leak detection in Cape Town.

Walk-In Showers and Bath-to-Shower Conversions

A walk-in shower has a level or near-level entry, a fixed glass panel and a floor that falls to a channel or square drain. Taking a bath out and putting a walk-in shower in its place costs R20,000 to R45,000 in Guide B1. The floor fall and the waterproofing carry the job; the glass is the last day.

Cape Town Water By-law Rules for New Bathroom Fittings

Schedule 1 of the City of Cape Town Water By-law, 2010 sets water-saving limits that apply to the fittings chosen for a renovation:

FittingLimitWater By-law, Schedule 1
Wash-hand basin tapMaximum 6 litres per minuteItem 11
ShowerheadMaximum 7 litres per minuteItem 12
New or replaced toilet cisternMaximum 6 litres capacityItem 13

Section 48(1) of the By-law makes the owner responsible for having installation work done by a qualified plumber and for having a certificate of approval submitted for newly completed or altered water installations.

Toilet Installation

A new or replacement toilet in Cape Town takes a cistern of no more than 6 litres (Water By-law, Schedule 1, item 13). Moving the toilet to a new position needs no building plan under the City's guide to minor works, as long as the job does not add new or extended drainage or plumbing. A toilet that runs on after flushing wastes water and money: the cistern valve is the first thing checked.

Do Bathroom Renovations in Cape Town Need Building Plans?

Bathroom Remodel and the Geyser

Where the bathroom's geyser sits in the roof space, a remodel is the time to check its age, drip tray and valves, because opening the ceiling later costs more: geyser installation in Cape Town.

Cape Town Home Repairs: Questions Homeowners Ask

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Cape Town?

A full bathroom remodel costs R60,000 to R120,000 in a June 2026 Western Cape renovation guide (Guide B1). The same guide gives R25,000 to R50,000 for a cosmetic update on the same layout and R130,000 to R250,000 for a high-end bathroom or en-suite addition.

Do I need plans to renovate a bathroom in Cape Town?

Not for new fittings in the same place. The City's guide to minor works says installing or moving a toilet, bath or geyser needs no plan, provided the work does not include new or extended drainage or plumbing. Removing a wall that may change the building's structure does need approval.

What flow rates must new taps and showers meet in Cape Town?

Schedule 1 of the City's Water By-law caps a basin tap at 6 litres a minute and a showerhead at 7 litres a minute, and limits new or replaced toilet cisterns to 6 litres.

Why does shower waterproofing matter?

Tiles and grout are not waterproof. Water that passes the grout soaks the wall and floor behind it unless a membrane sits under the tiles. A failed shower is stripped back to the screed to fix it.

How much does it cost to turn a bath into a walk-in shower?

A bath-to-shower conversion costs R20,000 to R45,000 in a June 2026 Western Cape renovation guide (Guide B1), including waterproofing, tiling and a new screen.

Who does the plumbing on a bathroom renovation?

A qualified plumber. Section 48(1) of the City's Water By-law requires the owner to ensure installation work is done by a plumber qualified under section 47, and that a certificate of approval is submitted for newly completed or altered installations. The quote names who signs it off.
