Geyser Installation Cape Town: Burst Geyser Replacement, Geyser Repairs and Solar Geysers

Geyser installation in Cape Town costs R6,500 to R11,500 for a 150-litre electric geyser, fully installed with the certificate of compliance, in a 2026 national geyser guide; a Western Cape row in a 2025 guide gives R6,500 to R10,000. A burst geyser is replaced, notified to the City and checked for damage to the ceiling below it.

Use the form below for a repair or renovation quote.

The quote names the geyser size, the valves and drip tray, the ceiling repair if one is needed, and the qualified plumber who signs off the work.

Burst Geyser: What to Do First

  1. Power off. Switch the geyser off at the distribution board.
  2. Water off. Close the cold-water supply valve to the geyser, or the main stopcock.
  3. Drop the pressure. Open a hot tap.
  4. Protect the room. Move belongings out from under the wet ceiling and keep people clear of a sagging board.
  5. Get it inspected. The geyser, its valves and drip tray, and the ceiling below are checked.

A geyser in the roof space sits directly above a ceiling. When it bursts, the ceiling board takes the water: ceiling repairs and installation. A slow drip that never trips anything shows up on the meter instead: leak detection in Cape Town.

Geyser Repairs or Replacement?

A geyser that runs cold, trips the electricity or drips from the overflow often needs a part, not a new tank: an element, thermostat, pressure control valve or vacuum breaker. Guide G3 puts Cape Town geyser repairs from about R750. A tank that leaks from its body, or has burst, is replaced.

For new buildings and extensions that need plans, National Building Regulation XA2 requires at least 50% of the annual hot-water heating to come from something other than electrical resistance heating, such as solar heating or a heat pump. In Cape Town, solar installations follow SANS 10106 and heat pumps SANS 1352 under Water By-law section 52(1).

Cape Town Home Repairs: Questions Homeowners Ask

How much does geyser installation cost in Cape Town?

A 150-litre electric geyser costs R6,500 to R11,500 installed, including the certificate of compliance, in a 2026 national geyser guide (Guide G1). A Western Cape row in another guide (Guide G2, 2025) gives R6,500 to R10,000 for a standard 150-litre replacement.

What should I do when my geyser bursts?

Switch the geyser off at the distribution board, close the cold-water supply valve to the geyser or the main stopcock, open a hot tap to drop the pressure, and move belongings out from under the wet ceiling. Then have the geyser and the ceiling below it inspected.

Who may replace a geyser in Cape Town?

Only a person qualified and accredited under the National Qualifications Framework Act, 2008. Section 47(1)(b) of the City of Cape Town Water By-law bars anyone else from replacing a fixed water heater or its protective devices.

Does the City need to know about a new geyser?

Yes. Section 42(7) of the Water By-law requires the owner to notify the City when a fixed water heater, a heat pump or solar hot water panels are installed or changed.

No. The City's underground leak rebate excludes leaks from overflowing geysers, defective toilets and similar fixtures.
